Balancing BJJ,
family and work

An academy archive guide to making time for training alongside the rest of your week.

Make a training routine that fits your week

Our earlier guide considered a familiar question for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students: how can training fit alongside family life and work? Planning sessions, talking about commitments and being flexible were its main themes.

A useful starting point is to look at the week you actually have. Choose training times that leave room for work, travel and the people who depend on you, rather than filling every free evening.

Plan a manageable week

Use the current BJJ timetable to see which Gi and No-Gi sessions fit your routine. Account for the journey to Tong Road and time to change, as well as the class itself.

Your routine can change as other commitments change. If you are new to the academy, start by choosing a suitable taster and seeing how that visit fits into your day. There is no need to plan a whole training week before your first class.

Talk about your commitments

Discuss regular training plans with the people who share your time or responsibilities. Agreeing which evenings work, and keeping one another informed when plans change, can make the practical arrangements clearer.

When you are at class, listen to the coach and work with your partner. When you are with family or at work, give those commitments their own time too. The aim is a routine you can continue alongside the rest of your life.

Leave room to adjust

Some weeks will allow more training than others. Review your plans when work or family needs change, and ask the academy about the available sessions if you need a different starting point.
