BJJ and kickboxing
in MMA training

An academy archive guide to the different skills that come together in mixed martial arts.

Learning to connect striking and grappling

The original Mastering MMA article explored the relationship between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. Its central idea was that practising different skills matters, alongside learning how they connect.

MMA combines striking and grappling, including movement between standing and ground positions. BJJ and kickboxing offer ways to practise parts of that wider skill set; an MMA class brings those areas together.

The grappling part of MMA

BJJ focuses on positions, control, escapes and submissions. Partner practice gives students opportunities to understand balance, respond to movement and connect one position to another.

In MMA, grappling sits alongside striking and the transitions between them. The context matters: learning a technique is a starting point for understanding when and how it fits. Read our Gi and No-Gi BJJ guide for the current Leeds programme.

The striking part of MMA

Kickboxing practice includes stance, footwork, punches, kicks and defence. Timing, distance and returning to a balanced position matter alongside the individual strikes.

These skills connect with grappling in MMA. Ask the coaches how the current kickboxing and MMA sessions fit your interests and experience, rather than assuming every class has the same focus.
